8 a.m. in Ameerpet, Hyderabad, India

There sat a young graduate on his table dressed in a green sweatshirt and white shorts reading a newspaper. It was a lazy Saturday and finishing all the office work he freely caught up on the news. Tea was being boiled on the gas in his kitchen, and as he switched off the gas, he heard the bell ring. Quickly pouring the hot pipping tea in his white china cup, he opened the door.

He was greeted by a tall man in Khaki coloured uniform. He was the community postman.

“Sir, a letter for you!” he smiled handing him the letter.

“A letter? No one writes letters these days and especially not to me” the man at the door replied with a puzzled look.

“Well let me recheck the address,” the postman said adjusting his glasses, then he looked with satisfaction back at the other man and said, “ it clearly states, it is for you, Mr Jha.”

Adit Jha, as it was his name, took the letter thanked the postman and with his tea beside him opened the letter. The letter was quite old fashioned and dusty one written in a beautiful maiden’s handwriting.

The letter read-

Dear Adit,

Well, firstly a very happy birthday to you! I know I have already texted you a birthday wish but decided to surprise you with a letter as well. Hope you are doing well and enjoying your birthday, without me of course.

Anyways, I am sorry for not giving you a gift as you know, I am sick and quarantined with my father. Just tried experimenting with something new that was a letter to you. Write back to me about your life, and before that listen to mine here in Banglore.

I ain’t studying as holidays are out here, but neither am I enjoying out here as I am lying in my bed doing boring little work, a bit of gaming, exploring music and whatnot which you can call non-serious work. Life is not interesting but it is not that bad either. All you have to do is to wake up, bathe and brush, eat a healthy breakfast, do some yoga and then do all the timepass that I mentioned above, haha! Okay, I guess enough of talking, bye for now, don’t forget to write back!

Yours lovingly,

Saloni Mehta.

A week ago in Banglore, Karnataka, India.

There in the small corner of her mother’s bedroom played a girl of eight years old. She had charcoal black eyes which blended with the colour of her hair tied in two pigtails. She opened her mom’s small cupboard, she was bored and was searching for something interesting to kill time with.

After digging a lot her hand touched a smooth round cyan blue box under the garments of her mother. She carefully yanked it out from under the clothes and within a fraction of seconds, opened it. A rusty piece of paper stumbled out of the box, which she picked and opened. Well, she did not know how to read properly, but she did know that it was a letter written for someone.

She quietly tucked it in her skirt pocket and rearranged her mom’s cupboard the exact way it was before, as she knew her mom would give her a good thrashing if she messed with her belongings. On the other end of the house was Saloni Mehta, a beautiful young lady who sat in front of the god and closed her eyes and prayed. Then she called for her daughter and both of them went out. They were going to the nearby park where the young girl would meet her gang of friends and Saloni would meet hers. The park had a postbox beside it, where the young lass, without anyone seeing simply dropped the letter into it.

The truth was Saloni never posted the letter, because she never got the chance to do so, It was thus kept safely in the cyan box that she never showed anyone and barely opened which was slid under a big heap of dresses. Her naive daughter did not know that she was coincidently completing an unfinished task.

Present-

Back to Hyderabad-

Adit stared at the letter. Saloni. That name which had withered away three years back, he had forgotten her. In front of him stood a letter which she had written five years ago to him, on his birthday, that he had received now.

She used to be his best friend, well-wisher and someone whom he loved like a sister. But then she went on her own ways and terms after graduation and so did he. They corresponded through text and Instagram, for a long time, but soon it started decreasing due to their busy days and personal lives, finally, it completely stopped as they were so into their career that they forgot the presence of each other.

He quickly searched her upon and Instagram and soon found her id. Then he texted her. After a few hours, he got a reply and now everything was sorted about the letter and other topics. The conversation went on like for two hours, but there was a mystery still yet to be found out by them- None of the two ever knew that who had posted the letter, but all they knew was that two forgotten friends, were re-united.
